Academic English
for Future‑
Ready
Students
From essays to presentations, we help pre-university students develop the English skills they need to thrive in international classrooms.
Our Academic English Program is designed to direct, guide and support learners through English language learning that prepares for transition to an
English-speaking university
Our
GOALS
-
to develop the English language proficiency level and the academic literacy skills learners require to achieve successful entry to an English medium higher education institution
-
to foster a level of English language communicative competence that will allow each learner to participate with confidence within the community of the higher education institution
Why is IELTS Score Not Enough for Academic Success?
High IELTS score ≠ smooth study
A non-native English speaker need 50% time longer to read and write an academic paper (Amano et al., 2023)
No extra guidance past IELTS test
International students are aware of their linguistic disadvantage but seldom know how to respond (Tardy, 2004)
Underestimated challenges
Although basic English communication skills can be developed in as quickly as a few years, university-level academic English proficiency takes about 5-7 years to develop (Cummins, 2008)
Academic English helps native speakers too
Even native English speakers find that they need to write and read unfamiliar genres and participate in unfamiliar events when they enter university (Hyland & Shaw, 2016)
